Each year since 1986, National Philanthropy Day has been celebrated in various places around the world. As charitable organizations have continued to grow and progress, so has our community awareness and recognition of the causes that need our help. Philanthropy means “the love of humankind” and National Philanthropy Day (NPD) is a celebration of that love.
This year Sterling State Bank’s late Chief Credit Officer Tom Winkels will be recognized as the Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser of the year. Tom was chosen for the award by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Southern Minnesota Chapter. This award is given to an individual or family that demonstrates strong skills in organizing, coordinating, and motivating groups of donors and volunteers to benefit charitable organizations. The selected recipient must demonstrate exceptional leadership skills in coordinating groups of donors and volunteers, for major fundraising projects and for more than one nonprofit organization. Tom was nominated by Olmsted Medical Center (OMC) for his work on their board and for his involvement with fundraising for OMC, the Ronald McDonald House of Rochester, MN and the Salvation Army of Rochester.
“Tom was a hard person to say no to, he led by example – his passion was contagious and motivating,” said Justin McNeilus, President of Sterling State Bank. Fundraising events that Tom was involved with include the Annual FORE! Golf Tournament presented by OMC, the Hearts & Diamonds Gala benefitting the Ronald McDonald House of Rochester, MN (RMH) and the annual Taste of the Town banquet in support of the Salvation Army.
“He really enjoyed seeing the results of these fundraising events,” Justin continued, “to be able to help people with healthcare, and to provide a place to live during treatment were outcomes of these fundraising efforts, which in turn played a major role in improving individuals lives.” Sterling State Bank continues to build upon Tom’s legacy through involvement with new nonprofit organizations as well as ongoing connections with OMC, RMH, Salvation Army, and many others.
“Our goals in the coming year are to get more people involved, to be hands on and increase employee engagement with our community,” states Justin. Sterling State Bank is proud to contribute to the communities we serve through donations and volunteer recruitment. There are so many great nonprofit organizations across all our markets that provide shelter, food, clothing and many other needed resources to those in need. Sterling State Bank is grateful to be involved with many of them.
We appreciate all that Tom did as a part of the Sterling State Bank team, and we miss his presence greatly. Tom Winkel's family will accept the award on Tom’s behalf at the November 15th awards luncheon.
In Rochester, MN National Philanthropy Day will be celebrated at the Rochester Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, November 15, 2016.
