Mark Your Calendars: Thursdays on First & 3rd 2016

Live music, fresh food, and sunshine are the markings of a summer celebration done right. Thursdays on First & 3rd is more than just a summer market and music festival, it is a Rochester, MN ‘can’t miss’ event. Bringing the local community together weekly from June 2 – August 25, 2016 this event features over 100 arts, craft, and food vendors plus a variety of live entertainment from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the heart of Downtown.
This year Sterling State Bank is joining the Rochester Downtown Alliance as the lunchtime entertainment partner for Thursdays on First & 3rd. The Bank is also sponsoring space to showcase local organizations making a difference in the community. These organizations include: Family Service Rochester, 125 LIVE, MN Adult & Teen Challenge, Zumbro Valley Health Center, Olmsted Medical Center, Boys & Girls Club of Rochester, and the Ronald McDonald House of Rochester, MN.
Each of these great organizations will be featured in a booth to the right of each entertainment stage during Thursdays on First & 3rd between July 21 – August 25. The entertainment stages are located at Peace Plaza and on 1st Avenue. Information on the bands scheduled to perform can be found here.
Starting off the lineup on July 21st is Family Service Rochester. This nonprofit was formed in 1965, to improve the quality of life for individuals and families in our community. Over time it has evolved into an 85+ staff with more than 30 programs. Focusing on families with serious child welfare and/or family violence concerns has further defined the work this organization does for our community.
In the following week, of July 28, 125 LIVE will be at Thursdays on First. 125 LIVE, formerly known as the Rochester Senior Center, is in the process of building a brand new state-of-the art facility. They offer many great programs to older community members including: social activities, fitness activities, special events, educational opportunities, and resources & personal services.
Up next is both MN Adult & Teen Challenge and Zumbro Valley Health Center on August 4. MN Adult & Teen Challenge’s mission is to assist teens and adults in gaining freedom from addictions and other life controlling problems. With campuses in Minneapolis, Brainerd, Duluth, Rochester, and Buffalo their organization provides a treatment program to many individuals throughout the state of Minnesota.
Zumbro Valley Health Center is a local, private organization that provides mental health, substance use disorder, primary care and community-based services to Southeastern Minnesota residents. Zumbro Valley Health Center focuses on the integration of mental health and other services, to improve the care for people diagnosed with a serious mental illness or severe and persistent mental illness.
On August 11, Olmsted Medical Center will be at the event. OMC has more than 20 specialties and is best known for its convenient, quality personal primary care. They have 18 locations, including two multi-specialty clinics, a Level IV trauma hospital with 24-hour emergency room, two FastCare retail clinics in Rochester Shopko stores, a Skyway Clinic in downtown Rochester, and 10 community branch clinics serving residents of Southeastern Minnesota.
Then on August 18, Boys & Girls Club of Rochester will be at Thursdays on First. Boys & Girls Club of Rochester’s mission is to empower young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring community members. This goal is met through providing a safe, positive environment with supportive relationships, fun, opportunities and expectations as well as recognition.
Ronald McDonald House of Rochester, MN will be at the final Thursdays on First & 3rd on August 25th. The Ronald McDonald House of Rochester, Minnesota provides a home-away-from home and offers support to families seeking medical care for children. In 2015, this organization served 863 families from 36 states across the United States and 16 different countries. Through the core values of compassion, hospitality with heart, mutual respect, community partner, sound management, and excellence this organization provides a positive experience during a difficult time in many families lives.
Ender Gocmen, Marketing Manager of the Rochester Downtown Alliance (RDA) describes Thursdays on First & 3rd as a, “fun, inviting, energetic and vibrant event right in the heart of downtown Rochester. There’s a great mix of food, craft goods, and music that you can enjoy with your friends or family, plus it’s free!”
While the weather can be a challenge at times for this event the RDA tries to maximize the day, check their site for any updates in changes to schedule on the day of. “I really enjoy hearing visitor’s experiences and being able to provide them an opportunity to become more connected with downtown Rochester,” explains Ender on what he takes away from the event’s impact.

Due to forecasted thunderstorms, Thursdays on First and 3rd has been delayed on the August 11th date. Unfortunately that means there is no lunchtime entertainment for the event.
Due to this change in plans we are working to re-schedule Olmsted Medical Center for another Rochester event this fall. More details to come at a later date.
