Happy Retirement, Cindy!
March 29, 2018
In 1972 at the age of 18, Austin native Cindy Folken, started her career as an insurance agent with the Osterud Agency in the Home Federal Building. She worked there until 1992, when she went on to work for First Bank Insurance. After 14 years, the agency was bought out and she came to Sterling State Insurance Agency. “I have enjoyed the 22 years I have spent with Sterling State Insurance Agency,” Cindy said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to work here. I have helped a lot of customers and become friends with them. I know that I will miss that part of my job.”
To no one’s surprise, there was nothing but positive remarks and fond memories from the team at Sterling State Insurance Agency.
Justin McNeilus, the President of Sterling State Bank said, “I want to personally thank Cindy for the wonderful job she has done with Sterling State Insurance Agency over the past 22 years. I am grateful for the experienced and talented employees like Cindy that have built their careers with Sterling State Bank and Sterling State Insurance Agency. We are truly blessed to have so many long-term employees like Cindy who continue to build their careers with the Bank and Insurance Agency.”
“I have really enjoyed working with Cindy for these past 17 years,” Barry Irish, President of the Austin Branch commented, “her dedication to The Sterling State Insurance Agency and her customers has been a fantastic example to me and those who work with her. I like to call Cindy ‘the Bulldog’” Irish joked, “because when she finds out a customer isn’t being taken care of properly watch out or you might get bit; I have heard more than one claim adjuster say she can be pretty intimidating. As my insurance agent I know she’s been taking care of me, as a coworker I know she’s got my back. I’m going to miss her.”
“I have worked with Cindy for over 30 years,” Jim Marx, Insurance agent, said, “we were both at First Bank System together, then in 1998 I went to work with Sterling State Insurance Agency where we became coworkers again.” Marx wishes Cindy the best in her retirement journey, “Thank you to her for caring for her friends, customers, and co-workers over all the years as she really cared for them. Wishing her great happiness in retirement.”
“I think she started at Osterud Agency when she was 18 years old,” Marilyn Berg, who worked with Cindy for over 20 years stated, “She looked scared to death and was so nervous. But Cindy fit right in. She was always an excellent worker, she did more than expected – would fill the shoes of two people. If someone was behind she would always step in and help out. She had the mindset that you don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today, and she always got it done.” Marilyn reminisced about their time together, “We would take our coffee breaks together every day. She is a firecracker I tell ya’. I had short legs, and hers were long and I would have to hustle to keep up. When we crossed the street, her long legs would fly, and she would grab my arm to hurry and cross the street,” Berg joked. “She and I became very good friends and being 20 years older than her I think of her as my daughter.”
After retirement, Cindy plans to travel with her husband, take walks, bike and enjoy not waking up to an alarm clock. She has made a lot of friends over the years and gets into a little trouble every now and then. “I love to laugh and have fun in whatever I do,” says Cindy.
To celebrate our years with Cindy, a retirement party will be held at our Austin Branch on Thursday, March 29, from 2:00 – 5:00 P.M.
